Beautiful Family Photos With Older Children in Huntsville
We see photo sets of toddlers and babies all the time. Chubby infants wrapped tightly in a ball and toddlers holding mommy and daddy’s hand are everywhere. And of course they are - those photos are adorable. As kids get older (and their protests to photo shoots with the family get louder), it’s easy to give up on those sweet pictures you want to frame on the wall. But despair not, friends! Photo sessions with older kids are possible and can even be enjoyable. Read on to find out the benefits and tips for photos with older kids.
When preparing for a photoshoot, explain to your older kids why you want to do this with them. Tell them how you love and admire them, and want to document this season of their life. Let them in on the planning and be open to their suggestions on what to wear and what to highlight. Maybe they want to take some shots with their extensive lego collection, or their guitar, or playing basketball with you. Bringing them into the planning and listening to their ideas can help them get excited along with you!
Don’t forget that your older kids are changing and growing! When you continue to document them over time, you can look back over those photos and see the way they develop. Their face slowly becoming more adult-like, the tops of their heads getting closer and closer to passing yours, and their clothing choices becoming more their own. These pictures are a time capsule and a history of your children growing up.
Perhaps most importantly, your relationship with your kids changes as they grow. Your teenagers probably don’t want hugs and kisses anymore, but you have new ways of connecting now: a head on your shoulder, a shy smile, a shared laugh. Maybe you like to take walks together, or have a favorite coffee shop downtown. Maybe you share a hobby or a special interest. These little things are all worth documenting!
Some things to remember...
Hands
Stay close and physically connected in some way. Sitting near to one another or even eye contact across a table are all ways to connect.
Talk to Them
Tell them the things that you love about them right now in this season.
Movement
You may not be spinning them still, but you can walk with them. Hold their hands. Sit with them and stroke their hair. Do a little dance. Whatever works for you!
Let Them Be Themselves
Are they silly? Serious? Adventurous? Don’t force them to sit and smile. Let them be who they are - that’s who you want to remember anyway.
