Being an outdoor family photographer in Madison Alabama, I get so many requests for Golden Hour sessions.
And rightfully so.
That glowy light is chef's kiss. Filled with warmth and emotion for your family storytelling session.
But the often forgotten about hero of these stories-the overcast day-should not be discounted.
There is an equally beautiful opportunity that comes with having an overcast shoot.
Here are just a few reasons why those cloudy, blue days can make for great family photos and how to navigate them.
Perfect Diffusion: Nature's Softbox
When there are clouds overhead you get the best, Even Lighting. Clouds act as a natural diffuser, spreading sunlight evenly across the your whole backdrop. This reduces harsh shadows and bright highlights, makig sure that faces are evenly lit, which is especially important when photographing families. At times you have a full 360 of where your photographer can shoot!
No Squinting!
Since there's no bright sun, your family won't have to squint or shield their eyes, making it easier to capture relaxed, natural expressions.
Vibrant Colors!
Soft lighting can bring out richer, more natural colors, particularly in clothing, backgrounds, and skin tones, as it's not being washed out by intense sunlight. So those little pops of color you've added in your family's wardrobe will stand out and give life to your images!
So don't rush to cancelling your session the next time you see clouds overhead. Some of my beautiful sessions have happened right before or right after a storm.
A great professional can document your family with any light.
