Questions to Ask Yourself When Hiring a Lifestyle Family Photographer
Choosing a photographer can be dicey business. You're thinking about style, what you'll wear, how your kids will behave, the weather, and cost to make the whole thing feel more stressful. Family photos are an investment and a keepsake, and you want to make sure you choose someone who makes you feel comfortable.
There are many considerations to make, including communication, editing, styling, location, comfort, posing, pricing, reviews, expertise, and final product (to name a few). And that feels like a whole lot.
Let's take a look at these factors and break them down a little bit.
Will they communicate well with me?
A lifestyle photo session requires planning and good understanding between photographer and client. Your photographer should communicate well from start to finish about everything from price to services offered to final products. Nothing should feel like a surprise - except maybe how lovely the experience is.
Will they help me with styling?
This one can mean more than you think. Figuring out what everyone should wear, what colors will look nice, and how to coordinate your family without being too "matchy" can be a frustrating process. A good photographer will help you choose colors and outfits that will have you and your family looking your best.
Do they know beautiful locations for your session?
Locations, and especially which ones look good in pictures, are key to a successful end product. Your photographer should be able to suggest a few locations they love for your session. They will be familiar with the terrain, lighting, and best time of day to take your photos.
Do I feel comfortable with them?
If you don't feel comfortable with the person behind the camera, that discomfort will come across in your final product. Make sure you and your photographer are on the same page, that they listen to your vision and your concerns, and that they do all they can to put you at ease.
Does their posing look natural?
Think about the kind of photos you like; what kind of posing are the subjects doing? If you are going for the relaxed, natural look of lifestyle photography, make sure your photographer's portfolio is full of that type of posing.
What is their pricing like?
Cheaper is not always better in the world of photographers. An experienced professional, or even a talented person at the start of their career, will know how to both value their time and also work with you to find a package that is within your budget. Remember that family photos are a keepsake and an heirloom; they are worth the investment.
Are they an expert in their field, and does that matter to me?
An expert photographer brings a lot to the table for your session: experience with kids (cheerful or not) and weather (beautiful or not). A sense of perspective. Ease with posing families. Tips and tricks for turning around a rough session. Lots of ideas in their tool bag. Experienced editing. And obviously, so much more.
Of course, some clients don't mind having a photographer earlier in his or her career, and the potential price cut can be a pivotal part of your decision. Everyone starts somewhere! You have to decide what matters to you, and whether you value the ease and experience an expert brings.
Do they have reviews and testimonials?
Checking in on a photographers reviews and comments on their work by their clients can give you a picture of how that person is to work with. Consider what factors are important to you and look for those things in their reviews. Want an easy-going photographer? Look for reviews like "she was so go with the flow!" or "he wasn't phased by anything!" Testimonials and reviews are a great way to guide your choice of photographer.
Are they only interested in digitals, or do they offer printed work as well?
Digital copies are important, especially as a backup for emergencies. However, working with a photographer who offers prints means that you get your session, editing, and print work all in one place. This way you and your photographer can make sure your final product is the quality of work you are looking for.
