I often look at family portraits taken in stunning and exotic locations and think,
"If only I lived there..."
or
"There is nowhere that beautiful in Huntsville Alabama."
And while North Alabama may not be the vast dessert of the majestic gold coast, there is beauty to be found in even the most ordinary of places.
During this Huntsville creek session a massive storm rolled in that forced us out of the water. We had about ten minutes to spare before the sky opened up so I suggested to my client, " let's stop here really quick by this overpass.
Fortunately, my clients trust me and are always up for letting me run with a vision.
(side note: hire someone that you can give the reigns to and trust with all of the details of your next session).
This junky overpass became the backdrop for gorgeous, emotive, storytelling images. I'll share some below along with some of the prompts that went along with them.
Prompts for Beautiful, Storytelling Images
to mom: Just sit with your daughter
to little girl: Can you pick some flowers for mommy?
I love this because it's hands off and allows you to just capture a parent observing and admiring their beautiful child.
have one parent hold a child upside down.
This brings delight to the child and allows you a chance to get genuine giggles. When possible, have one person make eye contact with the camera while the other subject engages and shows affection to the child.
A simple game of follow the leader...always tells a beautiful story.
These aren't complicated and elaborate prompts. They are simple enough to let each family fall into them in a way that is authentic for them.
They are powerful enough to tell a story that isn't dependent upon some grand location.
Just you+ your people + your love.
